Welcome to Season 2010/11

On behalf of the committee,  press officer Bowman welcomes all Mid Sussex Marlin swimmers back from your summer break and he is sure that you had some amazing adventures during holidays abroad or here at home.  Hope you have been putting that hotel pool to good use !

September 1st see's the start of the new season and across the board Marlins swimmers will be returning to the Triangle, Dolphin and Ardingly in great numbers to resume their love of Swimming.   From our youngest and newest teaching group members, through training groups, starfish, water polo teams, masters and of course the top squads it will be all go over the coming months.

Looking at the calendar there are some exciting and spectacular events coming up with the highlight being Team Marlin involvement in the National Swimming League held over 3 dates. Our A team will be in illustrious company this year following our promotion to the South East Premier League.  We will be swimming against the very best swimmers in the region. If we manage to stave off relegation it will be the biggest achievement in our history. The B team are in the South West Div 2 league and as always we will be striving to get into promotion territory.

Gala 1   9th October         A team away Canterbury   B team away Guildford

Gala 2   13th November    A team  away  Oxford        B team home @ Triangle

Gala 3    11th December    Venues to be decided.

Note that Oxford will be our longest ever away trip !!

Head coach Kevin Wright and his staff certainly have their work cut out for them over the coming months. During a summer training session Kevin said ' I am really looking forward to the coming season and working with the swimmers, being in full control of session plans, targets and team selection I will be working very hard to deliver a professional and slick product here at the Marlins'   Talking of the Swimming League he suggested ' it's going to be very tough, I know that, but we will be sending our teams into battle fully prepared and confident of doing their best'   he added 'hopefully there will be a massive turnout to the Social Club night on the 10th September where plans for the future will be unveiled along with a review of the previous year. It should be a lot of fun'

Kevin (in his 'office')  has the full backing of the Chairman Mills and the Committee.

Our back room staff all have a massive role to play .  It's with pleasure to introduce Amanda White who is our Gala Secretary. Looking after the nuts and bolts of every gala (expect open meets) Amanda makes sure that venues, equipment, bus hire and interfacing with the Leagues governing bodies are all in place ready for swimmers to utilise.  It is a massive task.  Neil Harding is our officials secretary making sure that all events both here at home and away are fully staffed with the appropriate officials.  In some cases he has to make sure that 20 plus people are on poolside for 1 meeting.

Then we have Team managers Julia Shaw (A team) and Liza Curtis  (B team). Once the teams have been selected by the Head Coach the girls then need to make sure that the swimmers are advised and are ready to turn up as expected. On the day of the gala team managers are then responsible for the safety of the swimmers and they travel with them to away fixtures.  (That means a long coach journey to Oxford for Julia on 13th November !!)

Angela Gibson is our Open Meet gala secretary.  Please look our for open meeting opportunities on the web site.

The calendar also reflects some exciting team friendlies, 3 more internal Club Champs and Developments Galas for our youngsters. Draw your attention to the Invitation Champs on 28th November and 4th December where our Teaching Groups get the change to shine in their annual premier Gala.  Parents, please watch out for further on this.

Everything kicks of this Sunday  5th Sept at traditional curtain raiser  County Relays @ Prince Regent.

Bowman says  ' it is true that the Marlins have suffered a the odd setback over the past few months and moral may be a little low at this time but we are going into very exciting times and with Kevin at the helm I am certain that with togetherness, showing that strong Marlins team spirit, we will emerge stronger than ever watching our home grown talent rising through the ranks.  I urge all invitees including parents to come along to the Club Social on Friday 10th September @ Wivelsfield Village Hall  6.45-10.30pm where a brilliant time is expected.   Finally, hope that you all enjoy the coming months'

All the best and watch out for further articles both here and in the 'Middy'

Colin.  (Club press officer)
